How Can New Moms Really Get Rest?

Every mom (especially new moms) can relate to the physical exhaustion of being a mom. Babies are a lot of work and come with dangerously unique levels of sleep-deprivation that more often than not, knock new moms off their feet.

A 2023 Pew study revealed that mothers are 47% more likely to say that parenting is tiring than fathers. This makes sense when we think of how moms physically and emotionally care more for the kids particularly in their newborn days.

So how can new moms find rest in the chaos of nurturing a newborn?

Our top tip is, it starts with a mindset.
You should really believe that your rest is top priority and that a lot of other things will have to take a backseat as you try to navigate the newborn phase. This can mean saying no to activities and commitments that would most likely not fill your cup or eat into your rest time.

Second on our list is getting your partner involved.
The reason why it seems so overwhelming for new moms is because beyond childcare, the burden of taking care of the home still lies heavily on them. Since your partner cannot care for the newborn the way you do, it’s important to discuss and agree on ways he can lighten the load especially on the home front so you can create more rest time.

Third on our list is quite similar to the second point, which is to determine (and rely) on a support system. A good support system is the solid foundation every new mom needs to overcome the newborn phase as it allows you to delegate tasks and receive help from those who truly care for you. It is important to recognize your support system and use them accordingly.

The newborn phase is very challenging, but with the right support you can find moments of rest and time to recharge to better care for yourself and your baby.
